In this paper, we study the optical attenuation behavior of several kinds of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) including pure SWNT, modified with COOH, NH2, and OH all with the thickness of 5 m. We focus on attenuation in communication wavelength range between 1260 and 1640 nm for non-amplification, and 1520-1570 nm for optical amplification setup. The results obtained here show that optical attenuation profile of SWNTs depends on the optical power. We have obtained an attenuation of 10 dB for a broadband source with +10 dBm power. We see a nonlinear behavior when the effect of optical amplification applied. Further, when we used a +18 dBm optical amplifier at 1520-1570 nm wavelengths, nonlinear behavior has been observed and SWNT exhibits more than 10 dB saturated absorption. We report here that SWNT in micrometer thickness has shown sufficient potential to be used in fiber optical communications to make different kinds of attenuators, limitation and saturated absorption devices.
